As Chicago struggles to reach a high in the double-digits, I would like to pay homage to the men who invented indoor heating.

Ironic comment of the day from Condoleezza Rice on the Today Show: "When you're dealing with a very secretive regime that is out to deceive...you're never going to be able to be positive.. .. Very secretive regimes want to deceive"
I think the Norvarg virus is really interesting. It's scheduled to run a DoS attack against SCO (the developers of Unix who are currently suing to remove code from Linux they claim was stolen from their Unix OS) and Microsoft on Sunday for a 12 day period. The reason this is interesting is because SCO and Microsoft are the two biggest threats to Linux right now. When something is open source, the way Linux is, that essentially means that anyone can add to the code and take pride in the end product. Looks like on of the hackers got pissed of at the people who are trying to put an end to Linux. It's like the scene in Fight Club where they grab the chief of police and threaten to cut his balls of if he doesn't stop investigating into the fight clubs springing up across the city.
"Look, the people you are after are the people you depend on. We cook your meals, we drive your ambulances. We connect your calls, we guard you while you sleep. Do not... fuck with us."

well, at least lieberman's out. i mean, he hasn't said it, but if the man can't get 10% in new hampshire, he's got to be out, right? right? right.
i'm officially a big nerd (like this is surprising to ANYONE). i haven't been able to sleep for three days because i keep having nightmares that joe lieberman wins the democratic nomination. and i've had stress-induced hiccups for the last three hours, because i'm so anxious about the results of the n.h. primary. swear to god, i'm going to combust into a little donkey-shaped pile of ashes.
Alhawk forwarded me this email and I thought I'd post.
During this year's Super Bowl, you'll see ads sponsored by beer companies, tobacco companies, and the Bush White House. But you won't see the winning ad in MoveOn.org Voter Fund's "Bush in 30 Seconds" ad contest (an anti-Bush campaign). CBS refuses to air it.
To check out the ad and ask CBS to air ads like this one, go to: http://www.moveon.org/cbs/ad/

Sun's developing a desktop gui for Linux with 3D objects. Tired of looking at your lame-assed office application? Just spin it out of the way.
Hey people! Check this out! You may have heard of this poll by AFA (American Family Association--note here how the name of this group sounds at first glance kind of innocent...), well it got clobbered!! This online poll was spread like wildfire via blogs and friendster to the people non-targeted by AFA, those people actually took the time to click on their mouse 2 or 3 times, and... Voilà! The AFA, a conservative organization that wanted to lobby Congress to define marriage strictly as a union between a man and a woman, now has poll results indicating that 60% of voters favor legalization of homosexual marriage!
So much for trying to control something posted on the Internet...

For those of you wondering what Jesse Jarnow has been up to lately

Aw man. I'm the shit. I don't know if I can even begin to explain what I just pulled off in Excel, but it's the sweetness. All I can tell you is that I just circumvented hours of busy work using an if then statement, and a pivot table. BOWMB.
Jesus Fucking Christ!!! Jen Katz!!! How in the hell are you going to the stench of politician off of you? That's amazing.
Speaking of amazing, everybody go out an listen to The Shins It's pretty much the best. We picked up the latest this weekend and their songs have been stuck in my head ever since!
I guess I should get back to crunching my numbers. PEACE
holy crap. I don't even know where to begin. You are so cool Jen Katz! But what I really want to know is what on earth did you do to make John Edwards give you the finger?!

alison's right: dean *is* kind of crazy. but he's a crazy whose hand i shook this weekend, multiple times. that's right, kids: i went to iowa for the caucuses. i stayed with jkd, tanner and aaron leavy, and was not in the least surprised at what went down last night. disappointed? yes. surprised? no. i'm a little too exhausted to write much about it, so instead i'll just recount my brushes with celebrity: my butt appeared on nbc news with tom brokaw, who i met; i sang the star spangled banner with joan jett and janeane garafalo(?) while young republicans rioted around us; i shook president bartlett's hand, and noted the expanded girth of rob reiner's midsection, up close and personal; i literally walked into howard dean, and then inadvertantly shoved him; john edwards gave me the finger; i talked to wolff blitzer at length in the des moines airport security line about the disconnect between the democratic party establishment and people under the age of thirty; and, i sat next to none other than the hippie-vegan-elfman himself, mr. dennis kucinich, en route from des moines to minneapolis.
how's that for hobnobbin'?
Here's a neat picture from our fun weekend. Andy and Paul built a bonfire on the frozen lake. (not next too, ON). I thought it would melt the ice and fall through but the ice was pretty thick. Turns out Madisonites have lots of fun on the frozen lake: ice skating, walking their dogs, having bonfires. Neat!
For awhile I thought Dean was the Democrats only hope, but now I'm starting to think he's just a maniac

yoyoyo! just back from a fantastic weekend in Madison where we (drum roll please) but a deposit on a pretty neat little apartment. It's a lot smaller than our current place, but with half our normal income it's probably a good idea to start small. Pictures can be seen here more neat pictures to come soon.

Well only 45 minutes left at work today because Paul and I are cutting out early to head to Madison. Woo-hoo! We've actually got about 6 dog-friendly apartments we're looking at and then spending the rest of the time kicking it with Mary and Big Andy (Sarah is out-of-town :( ) So I think a good time will be had by all. Hopefully I'll be able to post some pictures of our possible new place on Tuesday. Happy MLK JR day to everybody.

Umf. Working on a farm in New Zealand doesn't sound that bad. It's a hobbit's life, really. Right now, it sounds better than working in an office in Chicago. Well, you know what they say, one man's waste is another man's soap.
First day opening that GRE practice book. It's going to happen, with or without a plan. Because now and until August, I have a goal, Finland to look forward to, but then... Anybody want to go to New Zealand around the first half of 2005 and work on a farm? (yes, I know, not very original, but I'm still working on the idea...)

weekend update
so this weekend in the cardavi household was quiet. Paul and I were in OP on saturday doing laundry and helping with someone's thesis research. Did anyone else see Michelle Kwan kick some ass at the US Nationals? It was impressive. Then on Sunday I went on a wild goose chase for a Sam Goody (boring story) but began phase 1 of "Mastering Palak Panir" which meant cooking dinner and having Catherine over to enjoy it with us. I've learned that the key to the best Indian cooking is a LOT of dairy (butter, milk, cream). My goal is to have a Rajun Cajun worthy Palak Panir and Mattar Panir by the time we leave for Madison. I'm going to miss that place like hell man. Now I am at work waiting for a print job to come up. Fun times. Anyone else have a weekend update?
Hey kids, I signed up! Instead of doing work. Ah.... well. Bonne Année tout le monde! Currently looking for an apartment just outside of Paris. If you have any ideas, let me know. Thanks and much love from across the Atlantic, Claire.

Jeremy Ellison Gladstone sighting! First he was in a Snickers commercial, then a Wendy's commercial, and now you can see him dancing cheek to cheek with John Stamos in a 10-10-987 commercial! That guy is moving on up.

Oy. I would just like to state that the people who work for one of my magazines in NY are biznitches. Totally. If I have one more person talk down to me via email I think I am going to poop in an envelope and send it to them. That would really show them. Sigh.
