Things French

The following video clip I found on Liberation.fr, and is based on Sarkozy's now infamous insult thrown last week at a guy who wouldn't shake his hand. It's not the first time he overreacts to provocation. As they say in France, le ridicule ne tue pas (ridicule doesn't kill you... implied: but it sure makes you look like an idiot).

Things Bosnian

Alright here's the deal, right? I will post photos that are pertinent to Sarajevo, all taken by Ryker Labbee, a classmate and awesome photographer (he has his own site: www.oneworldimages.com). If any of you are interested in my two cents on Bosnian politics, let me know, I'll send you a report (a page and a half). Interesting, interesting place, with, would you know? Similarities with Haiti...

The old City Hall/National Library seen from one of the cemetaries in Sarajevo. The library was burnt and still not rebuilt, which is a real pity because it is gorgeous.

Things Italian

Sometimes, the stereotypes have some truth in them, and in this case, after the vote of no confidence given to Prodi, you wonder about Italian politics. And then you turn to Beppe and his blog. Read first the New Yorker article, and then check out the blog!
It's good stuff for a sound democracy (still needed in Italy), though there is one key thing I disagree about: the two term limit for congressmen. The trouble with limited terms is that once in their second terms, those guys react to no accountability and do whatever they want. I understand that Italians are sick and tired of politicians who have been in office for it and have nothing to show for it (or, have crime convictions to show for it), but it's best to have the electorate have the last say about someone's political shelf-life.
I've decided I won't leave Italy without have been to a V-day rally, and the next one is April 25th.

Obama in Madison

Well, Barack Obama is coming to Madison. Tomorrow night, he's going to have a rally at the Kohl Center. Ato Micah is having a little pre-party at his place that I'll be going to. I'm very excited to see him and hear him in person. He's one of the few people in the world of politics who has actually given me hope for the future. Obama had success this weekend on the campaign. I can only hope that it continues and he takes Wisconsin. Hey, if we can elect Russ Feingold to the Senate, we should be able to get Obama our delegates.

In a double dose of politically good news, Mitt Romney dropped out of the race, and creepaziod Mike Huckabee is almost mathematically eliminated. This means that the Republican candidate is John McCain. The good news is that McCain is the only Republican candidate to disparage torture, and especially torture in Guantanamo. The bad news is he's a Republican. Still, if America loses it's mind and votes in another Republican, I'll live with McCain. The rest seemed a little to interested in Stalinist semantics and rationalizations in regards to torture.

Back to Obama for a minute. Yesterday, my friend Susan said going to the rally is a no-brainer. Something along the likes of seeing Dr. King speak back in the 60s. I'm not sure if Obama will have that kind of impact. But he is seeking the office in one of the most crucial times we'll see. He seems to be the only real possibility for change. And change is what we desperately need.
